661 | COMMENCAL MUC OFF FORT WILLIAM FINALS

661 | COMMENCAL MUC OFF FORT WILLIAM FINALS

KING OF THE FORTFORT WILLIAM, SCOTLAND - UCI WORLD CUP #2

What a race, what a place, what a week, what a team!We returned to Fort William three years after the last World Cup at this legendary venue. The rugged but beautiful Scottish Highlands welcomed us with its usual splendour, a spot of sunshine but the promise of rain.

For riders, bikes, and mechanics, the Fort William track is a brute: long, hard and relentless, and it inevitably comes with a healthy dose of rain and dirt. The work-rate was high but the rewards weren’t immediately apparent; day one of practice and timed training left some substantial question marks over what was needed to get up to pace.

Qualification day came around with the mindset, “today is a new day”. And indeed it was. The process continued, progress quickened and it felt like the jigsaw pieces were beginning to fall into place. That said, Thibaut had a lucky escape from a crash in morning practice, and Tristan hit the deck twice in his Quali run which disappointingly meant he didn’t make it through to finals. Fort William always throws a curve ball or two, but on the whole it felt like we were heading in the right direction.

Race day rolled round and the crowds rolled in. Nervous energy hung in the air like the rain as the riders tried to piece together the final preparations amidst the building atmosphere of the Fort.

Hugo was first to race. He had been looking comfortable on the bike and confident in his lines over the week, but the stars are yet to align for him at the World Cup. A clipped rock resulted in a broken derailleur, and with that the chance to prove his speed was ended. Still, he safely made it down for 11th place and some points in the bag.

For Myriam, being in the start gate in Fort William was in itself a victory. After suffering with a concussion since Lourdes, Pompon kept it safe and solid, finding the balance of pushing hard whilst managing fatigue and risk. She was rewarded with a fine third place, showing once again her physical strength and mental tenacity.

Onto the Men’s race and what will remain an especially memorable day for the team. It’s an amazing feat to win a World Cup, but to come first and second in the same race is really something phenomenal. It’s not since Lenzerheide last year that Thibaut has had a clean World Cup race run, but after a slow start to the week things clicked into place when it mattered and he produced a brilliant performance. He wasn’t confident that it would be enough to stay on the podium, but as it turned out there would be only one man to go faster

That man was Amaury, who made it three wins in a row in Fort William, and two wins on the bounce this World Cup season. No amount of Scottish rain could put out the fire in his belly, and he certainly lit up Fort William. Again. It’s easy to say that Momo is a machine, but the emotional rollercoaster of his week shows his deeply human side. The struggle was real, but the rewards were sweet.

So many tiny details have to come together in order to place first, second and third at a World Cup. It's not as easy as 1, 2, 3!  From the precise lines on track to the perfect bike set-up; from physio treatment to nutrition; from the right equipment to the right environment and the right headspace.Team work makes the dream work, and we certainly made it happen this weekend!

661 | AMAURY WINNING RUN FORT WILLIAM

661 | AMAURY WINNING RUN FORT WILLIAM
It was another fearless Amaury Pierron performance in the men's race as the Frenchman took his third consecutive win on the Fort William track following his victories in 2018 and 2019 in Scotland. Pierron again showed his knack of being a race-day-player with a pin-point accurate run that saw him make a mockery of deteriorating course conditions for the last ten riders down the hill.

    AMAURY WINS IN LOURDES!

The season has started with a bang and our first World Cup win of 2022 is in the bag.

After Qualification yesterday there was a big question mark over whether Amaury would be able to race today, and the kind of perfect performance that is needed to win seemed impossible. However, today was a new day and Amaury showed he’s back to winning ways. He gave a simply brilliant performance, going fastest with two riders left to race and holding onto the hot seat through a nail-biting final run. After injury, illness and setbacks, this was a sweet tasting victory to celebrate with the crazy French crowds!

Myriam’s day ended in a superb second place, but it started with a big crash that put her capability of racing and delivering a decent result in real jeopardy. With incredible focus and determination, Pompon turned it around for finals, and even a couple of sketchy moments couldn’t keep her from coming within 0.624 of the win. This spirit is what makes her a Champion!

Thibaut was on brilliant pace all week but fatigue took its toll and he crashed in his race run. With his characteristic sense of perspective, he already sees the value of today’s experience and is looking ahead to the build towards Fort William.

Both Tristan and Hugo also fell foul to crashes today. After a super Qualification result for his first ever World Cup, Hugo really felt the disappointment of today’s result. For Tristan, the comeback from injury was not as smooth as he hoped, but to be in a position to race at all was a great achievement. They’ll both be back fighting near the front soon!

In the end, we leave Lourdes very happy. A win to start the season is a huge reward for the work done, and an equally big boost for the work to come.

661 | COMMENCAL MUC OFF LOURDES QUALIFYING

The first real test of the World Cup season brought us solid results and stoked the fire ready for the big battle tomorrow.

A chilly morning and a slippery track gave way to bright sunshine and increasingly fun and fast conditions as the riders really honed their race pace.

    - Hugo bounced back from a crash in the morning session to take fourth in his first ever World Cup Qualification.

    - After his recent injury, Tristan struggled to find the right headspace and pace today but is confident he can switch it up for finals and improve on 10th.

    - Myriam secured second place despite some ‘slower’ sections and is fired up and focussed ahead of tomorrow.

    - Amaury was feeling relaxed yet looking pinned on his way to third position, but an unclipped pedal off the final jump has left him nursing an ankle injury that we hope will hold up for race day.

    - Thibaut is happy with his fourth place, having laid down a clean and quick run which lays great foundations for finals.
